Hitachi, Toshiba Halt Expansion
In response to the sharp fall in semiconductor prices, Hitachi and Toshiba have postponed expansion plans. Hitachi has decided not to open new facilities at its Naka plant in Ibaraki Prefecture for at least a year. The ~$1.26 billion fab was to begin producing 64Mb DRAMs on 300 mm wafers in 1999. Currently, the company is considering reducing plant capacity as well. Toshiba Corp. will also suspend construction on a planned $1.09 billion plant. AB
