In-Stat Estimates Paging IC Market to Peak in 2000
In-Stat (Scottsdale, Ariz.) expects the revenue from paging ICs to peak at $511.3 million in 2000, with a gradual decline commencing in 2001. Although there are several growth areas in the world, the bulk of revenue generated by paging will be in the Americas and ROW.
"The competition in the paging market is fierce, as other wireless technologies threaten to shrink the market," said Emmy Johnson, analyst for In-Stat's Communications Semiconductor End-Use Service. "In-Stat expects industrialized areas to feel the brunt of this onslaught, which is reflected in regional year-to-year growth rates for new pagers."
Johnson explained that subscriber growth would be most substantial in two-way paging applications, with one-way paging holding the largest installed base of subscribers. The sale of new pagers will follow a similar trend. Although alternative paging applications, such as the new pager card for 3Com's Palm Pilot, are just now ramping up, In-Stat expects alternative paging applications to be 8% of the market by 2001. PS
