Change in Capital Spending 2000-2001

Key points

Expansions in capital spending and fab building are taking place in China, Southeast Asia and in most foundries except the top two (TSMC and UMC).

Capital spending by Chinese companies will increase by 113% this year.

Companies with new fabs in Singapore include Chartered Semiconductor (300 mm), Hewlett-Packard, STMicro, Systems on Silicon Mfg. (a joint venture) and UMCi (a 300 mm joint venture).

Two new fabs in Malaysia (1st Silicon and Silterra) began production in 2001.

Capital spending by foundries, excluding TSMC and UMC, will rise by 65% this year to $5B.
