The total dollar value of worldwide semiconductor sales during the first five months of this year was 14.3% below the same period last year. Unit sales of chips from January to May declined 10.9% compared with the first five months of 2000. According to preliminary data released by the SIA, the value of chip sales in May decreased 4% from April, and unit sales also dropped 3.5% over the month. The average price received for all types of semiconductors sold in May was 45 cents — 11.8% less than in May 2000.
Dollar-valued microprocessor sales volume fell 4.3% over April and May, and also declined 22.5% for the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year. DRAM sales volume dropped 41.5% for January through May compared with the same period last year. The dollar value of all discrete and optoelectronic chips sold through May recorded a loss of 6.7% over the year.
The average price for all integrated circuit devices sold worldwide declined 4.6% between April and May, and was 15.3% lower in May compared with May 2000.
