Fab Monitor: Asia Pacific Waves of Investment

-- Semiconductor International, 6/1/2001

Key points

For three consecutive years (1999, 2000 and 2001) Asia-Pacific has accounted for >30% of all capital spending.

Like South Korea and Taiwan before it, China is emerging as a major chip manufacturer.

As recently as 1996, China accounted for only 1% of all chip capital spending.

Spending by Chinese and offshore companies in China will account for 8% of the total this year, more than will be spent in Singapore.

Most new fab activity in China is concentrated near Shanghai or Beijing.

Four Chinese-owned foundries are under construction.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669.
