Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (Austin, Texas) has named Rich Beyer, CEO of Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, Calif.) until today, as its chairman and CEO. The change is effective next month. Beyer is taking over from Michel Mayer, who last week announced his plans to resign after four years at the helm following the 2004 spin-out of Freescale from Motorola Inc. (Schaumburg, Ill.).

Freescale has emphasized high-performance analog as a growth area, supplementing its core operations in wireless, automotive, networking and microcontrollers. The company has lost ~$2.8B over the past two years, largely because of
declining sales in the wireless operation.
Beyer joined Intersil in 2002. Prior to that, he worked at Elantec Semiconductor Inc. (Irvine, Calif.), VLSI Technology Inc. and National Semiconductor Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.). Beyer earned undergraduate degrees in Russian language studies from Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.), and has an MBA in marketing and international business from Columbia University (New York City).
Intersil immediately named David Bell as its CEO. Before joining Intersil last year, Bell served as president of Linear Technology Corp. (Milpitas, Calif.) from June 2003 until January 2007. He holds an electrical engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, Mass.).
